Yakisugi ash bowl
This form is all about impact – a large piece of beautiful English ash, turned with a wide rim to give the full effect of contrast between the charred, textured edge and smooth interior.
After turning and sanding, I char the outer with a blow torch, working gradually to achieve an even finish. The soot created in this process is then brushed out of the grain and I take the flame back to the surface to ensure a solid finish. Excess soot is then brushed away again before finally coating with layers of finishing oil, sanding with fine sandpaper in between coats to achieve a hugely tactile, textured finish. The piece is then turned for a final time, creating the inside of the bowl and leaving a natural wood finish for contrast.
Handmade in England by Percy.
31cm wide, 6cm high.
Note: This is a decorative item for ornamental display or practical use only (you could keep your keys in it, for example). Not designed to hold liquids or for food use.
